Ancient Jewish Presence in Sidon: A known Jewish community has existed in Sidon since the period of the Second Temple which lasted from 530 BCE. to 70 CE. This is attested to by a number of structures in Sidon that were built during the time of King Herod (reign: c. 37-4 BCE)1. The Jewish community of Sidon, however, is believed to have much older roots, which connects them to the first Israelites in the area who migrated to Lebanon in 1000 BCE2. By the beginning of the Common Era, Sidon had been beautified by Herod and many Jews were living in the city. Jews continued to live in Sidon until the late 20th century when the last Jewish family of Sidon left in 19853.
