Ezra Yaghoub Synagogue (کنیسه عزرا یعقوب), Tehran, Iran

Located in the Oudlajan neighborhood, an old Jewish neighborhood of Tehran, the Ezra Yaghoub Synagogue (کنیسه عزرا یعقوب) in Tehran, Iran was built in 1894 and still stands today.1

Description

History

The synagogue was funded by its namesake, Ezra Yaghoub, who as a successful Iranian Jewish merchant, was the first Iranian to have business in Manchester, England.2 Philanthropist Yeshoua Yehazghel “Joshua Ezekiel” Yadegar (1866-1952) would house migrant workers to Tehran in furnished rooms in the synagogue.3

Features

The synagogue has an area of 524 square meters.4 It has been restored many times.5 The synagogue has a courtyard, which windows face to receive sunlight.6

Current Standing

Since 2004, the Ezra Yaghoub synagogue has been placed on the list of historic buildings in the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts, and Tourism Organization.7

The synagogue is still functioning as of 2021, holding services periodically, despite relocation of the Jewish community out of Oudlajan to Yusef Abad.8
