Judah Hyam Synagouge in New Delhi, India. This one room synagogue serves the Delhi Jewish community of about 40 people.
The Judah Hyam Synagogue was built to satisfy the cultural and religious needs of Jews of New Delhi. Many Jews had been in New Delhi since before the colonial period but, most arrived during World War Two. A mix of American and British soliders with Germans and Poles who escaped the Holocaust formed the foundation of a community that holds roughly 40 people today. Construction of the synagouge began in 1956 and continues to hold Friday Evening Services and other religious events. Famous vistors of the synagogue include: Israeli Prime Minister Moshe Sharett, former Israeli Prime Minister, Shimon Peres, Lord Greville Janner, violinist Yehudi Menuhim.and H.H. Dalai Lama. The synagogue has served as the center for the Jewish community of New Delhi in the post-WW2 period.
