Shrine to St. Elias, (Mar Elias), Maaret Saidnaya (معرة صيدنايا), Syria.
Description
A Greek Catholic shrine to the prophet Elijah. Tradition holds that this is the place in "the desert of Damascus" where Elijah fled to after defeating the prophets of Baal. (I Kings 19:15 in the Christian Bible.) The shrine itself was built in 1897 by order of the Greek Catholic Patriarch Gregorious Joseph I.
