Al-Sada, Yemen

City of Sada (Sa'da, السدة), Yemen.

Description

In the south, southeast of Kitab. In Arabic السدة.

Sada was a city as opposed to the villages which surrounded it. It contained two synagogues, an upper (Aliyah) and a lower (Sufla). According to a former resident, the lower one utilized the Shami prayer rite while the upper used both Shami and Baladi. Besides for the two synagogues, there was also a midrash in the city which was located adjacent to the homes of Hayyim Yehudah and Harun Sa'id. The cemetery was located outside the city, and there were no headstones or other markers in the cemetery indicating where people were buried and it was also not the custom to visit the deceased at any point after the burial.
