Description

Cemiterio Campo da Igualdade

According to the deed of sale dated September 24, 1832, Joaquim Zagory acquired at a public auction the Camara de Angra a piece of land previously voted for the county corral by the amount of 300 thousand reis, in order to establish an Israeli cemetery. Zagory was born in Mogador and was a respected preacher.¹  

Also according to the deed, Abraao Benaoim had left a said amount in his will with the intent to build a “decent cemetery for all those who belonged to his Nation”. That same year, Fortunato Benjamin and Abraham Sebag, the first buried Jews, were buried. Today the cemetery has 53 graves. 

In 1958, the cemetery became the property of the Jewish Community of Lisbon, but in 1994, due to the great state of abandonment, Bensaúde company took its restoration, being responsible for their maintenance since then.

 

Segundo reza a escritura de venda datada de 24 de Setembro de 1832, Joaquim Zagory adquiriu em hasta publica a Camara de Angra um bocado de terreno anteriormente votado a curral de concelho pela quntia de 300 mil reis, a fim de estabelecer um cemiterio israelita. Ainda segundo a escritura, Abraao Benaoim havia deixado em testamento a referida quantia com vista a contrucao de um “cemiterio decente para todos aqueles que fossem da sua Nacao” Nesse mesmo ano, foram enterrados Fortunato Benjamin e Abraao Sebag, os primeiros judeus sepultados. Hoje, o cemiterio conta 53 sepulturas. Em 1958, 0 cemiterio tornou-se propriedade da Comunidade Israelita de Lisboa, mas, em 1994, devido ao seu grande estado de abandono, a empresa Bensaude assumiu o seu restauro sendo responsavel pela sua manutencau, desde entao.
