Jewish Cemetery in Horta, Faial, Azores

Description

In the old wall of Carmel, at the foot of the city cemetery, is the Jewish cemetery that houses 17 graves.

Although its construction was authorized by Order of May 13, 1851, the land purchase deed was only executed on 19 April 1852. The buyers were Bensabat Salomao, Salomao Sabat and Abraham Abisdid which cost 200 000 kings. The efforts of the Bensaúde family to establish a cemetery in every Azorean Island must also not be disregarded when talking about its construction.¹ It was established in the said deed that the cemetery was intended to bury the Jews of the islands of Faial.

The cemetery property was sold to the Jewish community of Faial. Then in 1983, the cemetery was given to the Jewish Community of Lisbon. The cemetery has been maintained by the Benarus family.
